Zusammenfassung:	The invention relates to a method for operating an annealing furnace for cooling a metal strip, comprising the following steps: specifying a desired temperature distribution for the metal strip over the length of the strip and controlling the actual temperature distribution for the metal strip over the length of the strip to the specified desired temperature distribution in the annealing furnace. To compensate for possible variations of the set of material properties of the metal strip over the length of the strip, the method according to the invention provides that the desired temperature distribution to be specified for the control is determined as follows: specifying strip data of the metal strip to be annealed; selecting a distribution of the actual material properties of the metal strip over the length of the strip before it enters the annealing furnace from a plurality of stored or adapted actual material properties on the basis of the strip data; and selecting the desired temperature distribution to be specified for the control for the metal strip over the length of the strip as the desired temperature distribution for the metal strip that is assigned to the selected actual set of material properties of the metal strip.
