WASTE COLLECTION SYSTEM FOR COLLECTING SOLID MEDICAL WASTE INCLUDING METAL DETECTION

A portable cart for containing medical waste includes a processor for continuously monitoring a signal of a sensor mounted to a frame of the cart for detecting when metal is passed through a frame opening. Based on a comparison between the sensor signal and a threshold signal level, the processor is configured to determine if a first object with a substantial content of metal has passed through the frame opening. If said comparison is positive, an audible alarm of the cart is actuated for a defined period of time, and a light alarm of said cart is actuated until a user-generated command is received. Upon receipt of the user-generated command, the processor negates the actuation of said light alarm. Prior to said processor negating the actuation of said light alarm, said processor is adapted to continue to determine if a second object with a substantial content of metal has passed through the frame opening and, if this determination based on the above comparison is positive, the audible alarm is again actuated for the defined period of time.
