Zusammenfassung:	A method for operating an internal combustion engine comprising a plurality of cylinders is disclosed. The internal combustion engine is configured to be operated by selectively activating and deactivating the cylinders. In order to reliably detect misfiring, an independent monitoring unit (150) is provided to determine an actual number of cylinders without combustion. The monitoring unit (150) further determines a target number of deactivated cylinders independent of a control unit (50) that deactivates the cylinders. When the actual number of cylinders without combustion is higher than the determined target number, an appropriate safety measure is performed.
