REDUNDANT PSEUDOWIRES FOR BORDER GATEWAY PATROL-BASED VIRTUAL PRIVATE LOCAL AREA NETWORK SERVICE MULTI-HOMING ENVIRONMENTS

A method performed by a provider edge device (110-1, 110-2, 110-3) includes generating pseudo-wire tables (125-1, 125-2, 125-3, 125-4) based on virtual private local area network service advertisements (120-1, 120-2, 120-3) from other provider edge devices (110-1, 110-2, 110-3), where the provider edge device (110-1, 110-2, 110-3) services customer edge devices (115-1, 115-2, 115-3), and establishing pseudo-wires (13, 31, 32, 23) with respect to the other provider edge devices (110-1, 110-2, 110-3), based on the pseudo-wire tables (125-1, 125-2, 125-3, 125-4), where the pseudo-wires (13, 31, 32, 23) include an active pseudo-wire and at least one standby pseudo-wire with respect to each of the other provider edge devices (110-1, 110-2, 110-3). The method also includes generating and advertising VPLS advertisement (120-1, 120-2, 120-3) to the other provider edge devices (110-1, 110-2, 110-3), detecting a communication link failure (130) associated with one of the customer edge devices (115-1, 115-2, 115-3) in which the provider edge device (110-1, 110-2, 110-3) services, and determining whether the at least one standby pseudo-wire needs to be utilized because of the communication link failure (130).
