A method is used to operate a household appliance (H) comprising an operating region (3) which has at least one touch-sensitive operating element (5-12) and which is constituted for operating by means of a detachable operating element (B), wherein the operating region (3) is configured according to a position (16-19) of the detachable operating element (B) in relation to the operating region (3). The invention can be used particularly advantageously for cooking appliances, for example, for independent hobs or cookers.
