Zusammenfassung:	A novel two step distillation process for recovering lactic acid and ethyl lactate from still bottoms is described. In comparison to conventional distillation processes, this process involves a reaction and a second distillation which converts the lactic acid monomer and other lactic acid species that remain in the still bottoms after a first, conventional distillation step into ethyl lactate by simultaneously esterifying and transesterifying all lactic acid species present in the still bottoms.
