Zusammenfassung:The invention relates to an internal combustion engine comprising: - an internal combustion motor (10),- a fresh gas train (12) having a compressor (14), - an exhaust gas train (22) including an exhaust gas post-treatment device and a temperature sensor (46), - an overflow line (34) which can be controlled by means of a closed-loop control device (36) and which leaves the fresh gas train (12) downstream of the compressor (14) and opens into the exhaust gas train (22) upstream of the exhaust gas post-treatment device, and - an open-loop control unit (50), which is designed in such a way that said open-loop control unit can control a fuel-fresh gas ratio fed to the internal combustion motor (10). The internal combustion engine according to the invention is characterized in that when a limiting temperature of the exhaust gas is exceeded, the control unit (50) operates the internal combustion motor (10) with a sub-stoichiometric fuel-fresh gas ratio and, at the same time, controls an overflow of fresh gas from the fresh gas train (12) via the overflow line (34) into the exhaust gas train (22) in such a way that an as far as possible stoichiometric exhaust gas ratio is established in the exhaust gas post-treatment device.
