Zusammenfassung: | Negative pressure units or NPUs (6, 56) are widely used to draw air out of working enclosures (3), such as those established to enclose hazardous operations such as asbestos removal, which need to be kept below ambient pressure and to have a minimum number of exchanges of air per hour or per work day. In order to ensure that such NPUs (6, 56) continue to operate effectively and to provide advance warning of blocking filters (8, 9), one or more hot-film thermistor airflow sensors (18) are positioned within an outflow of air from the filters (8, 9). The local airflow velocity from a single sensor (18) or an average of local airflow velocities from several sensors (18) can be used to calculate the volumetric airflow rate through the NPU (6, 56) and to warn when airflows deteriorate or filters (8,9) block. The NPUs (6, 56) may be provided with shutters (54, 64) in their exhausts which seal and prevent backdrafts when a fan (10, 60) of the NPU (6, 56) is not in operation. |
