Zusammenfassung:	A trial workpiece (22) for grinding by means of a belt grinding machine (14) is moved along a programmed path of movement (24) by means of a program-controlled handling device (12). In this case, the force (F) acting on the contact roller (32) and the position (P) of the actuating drive (38) are continuously detected and stored in the controller (28). On the basis of these data, it is determined when the trial workpiece (22) and the grinding belt (30) are in contact with one another and when they are not. During the subsequent production grinding of the workpieces (22), the actuating drive (38) is force-controlled in the portions in which contact took place during the grinding of the trial workpiece and position-controlled in those portions in which no contact took place.
