Device and method for starting an application

The invention provides a receiver (10) for receiving a digital broadcasting signal, such as a Digital Video Broadcasting, DVB, signal, the receiver comprising a processing unit (12) configured for - obtaining a plurality of application description items (23, 24, 25), each of the at least one application description items corresponding to an application and including a reference to a source of executable code of the application, the plurality of application description items forming an application list; - selecting an application from the application list based on pre-stored application preferences or on a selection made by a user via a User Interface, UI; - executing the selected application, by obtaining and executing the corresponding executable code.
