A paper conveying apparatus (100, 200) including a sound signal generator (141) for generating a sound signal, a sound jam detector (154) for determining whether a jam has occurred based on the sound signal, a control module (151) for stopping conveyance of a paper when the sound jam detector (141) determines that a jam has occurred, a paper state detector (145) for detecting a state of a paper, and a recovery processing module (153) for automatically performing a recovery processing which resumes conveyance of the paper in accordance with a content of detection of the paper state detector (145) after stopping the conveyance of the paper by the control module (151).
