An image reading apparatus (100) includes a separator (111, 112), an image reader (119) for reading an image from a paper, a conveying module (116, 117) for conveying a paper separated by the separator (111, 112) to the image reader (119), a side wall (130a, 130b) provided at a side of a conveyance path of the paper, a sound signal generator (141a, 141b), provided with a sound detector (113a, 113b) between the separator (111, 112) and the conveying module (116, 117) and near the side wall (130a, 130b), for generating a sound signal corresponding to a sound generated by the paper during conveyance, and a jam detector (153) for determining whether a jam has occurred based on the sound signal.
