Zusammenfassung:	This invention is directed in part to methods, assays and/or kits for identifying an individual who has an autoimmune disease (such as rheumatoid arthritis), or who has an altered risk for having or developing the autoimmune disease. The methods in one aspect comprise determining the presence or absence of a nucleic acid variant within the somatostatin receptor type 2 (sstr2) gene in the individual's nucleic acids, wherein the presence of the nucleic acid variant is correlated with having the autoimmune disease or the altered risk. The nucleic acid variant may, for example, be a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP).
