APPARATUS FOR HANDLING BANKNOTES

The invention relates to a device (10) for handling value documents, said device having at least one cash box (14a) for receiving value documents and at least one separating module (16a) for removing value documents from the cash box (14a). The separating module (16a) is disposed separately from the cash box (14a) and comprises at least one transporting element (30a to 30c, 34 to 38) for transporting value documents. In a first operating state, the transporting element (30a to 30c, 34 to 38) is rotatable in a first rotational direction in order to remove at least one value document from the cash box (14a) using a drive unit. In a second operating state, the transporting element (30a to 30c, 34 to 38) is rotatable in a second rotational direction opposite the first rotational direction in order to return a value document which is present in a dispensing area into the cash box (14a) using the drive unit. The separating module (16a) further has at least one returning element (50) which is rotatable from a first position into a second position in the second operating state in order to return the value document which is present in the dispensing area using the drive unit.
