The gas generator comprises a generator core with a propellant charge and an ignition unit (9), and a generator shell. Parts of the generator shell are formed by the airbag housing. The generator chamber and the air bag chamber are integrally formed. The generator shell comprises an upper shell and a lower shell. The upper shell or the lower shell is formed in one piece. The airbag housing (1) comprises a generator chamber (2) and an air bag chamber (3), where a folded, inflatable air bag is accommodated in the generator chamber of a gas generator and the air bag chamber. The gas generator comprises a generator core with a propellant charge and an ignition unit (9), and a generator shell. Parts of the generator shell are formed by the airbag housing. The generator chamber and the air bag chamber are integrally formed. The generator shell comprises an upper shell and a lower shell. The upper shell or the lower shell is formed in one piece with the airbag housing. The ignition unit is arranged in a breakthrough recess of a wall of the generator chamber or a wall of the top flange. The breakthrough recess is formed by overmolding the ignition unit at the primary forming of the bottom shell or of the airbag housing. The upper shell and/or lower shell comprises partially molded or overmolded long fiber or continuous fiber reinforcements or partially molded or overmolded metallic reinforcing elements.
