Zusammenfassung:A monostable ferroelectric active matrix display includes a single domain liquid crystal layer with specified values of pre-tilt and layer tilt angles and dielectric anisotropy. A monostable ferroelectric active matrix display includes a liquid crystal layer in the form of a single domain with a clearly defined direction of the layer normals (z) of the smC *>phase, the layer having (a) a chevron C2 geometry, a ratio of the sum of the pre-tilt and layer tilt angles to the tilt angle (WR = (Lkw + Prw)/Tiw) of greater than 0.1 and a dielectric anisotropy of less than 3; (b) a chevron C1 geometry, a pre-tilt angle (Prw) of >=5[deg] and a ratio of pre-tilt angle to layer tilt angle (Prw/Lkw) of greater than 0.7; (c) a bookshelf geometry and a pre-tilt angle (Prw) of >=1[deg]; or (d) a spontaneous polarization (P) of 0.1-15 nC/cm 2>, a tilt angle (Tiw) of 9-45[deg], an absolute value of the ratio of the layer tilt angle to the pre-tilt angle of >=0.2, a helix path height in the chiral nematic (cholesteric) phase of >=50 Micro within the temperature region of 5[deg]C above the smectic/nematic phase transformation and an absolute dielectric anisotropy value of less than 3. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) a method of producing the above active matrix displays; and (ii) active matrix displays produced by the above method.
