A method and a device for activating passenger protection means are proposed, wherein there is at least one interface to which an accident sensor can be connected, wherein the accident sensor generates at least one signal. An evaluation circuit which is connected to the interface and which produces a plurality of features from the at least one signal and forms a feature vector from them, wherein the evaluation circuit compares the feature vector with a set of training data by means of a distance measurement. It classifies the feature vector as a function of this comparison. There is an activation circuit which activates the passenger protection means as a function of an activation signal of the evaluation circuit.
