Zusammenfassung:	The present invention provides a method of driving a plasma display panel that displays an image with high brightness, high contrast, and high display quality by stabilizing selective initializing operation. To realize it, a plurality of subfields each having a setup period, an address period, and a sustain period are provided in one field period. Retention time for retaining voltages to be applied to a scan electrode and a sustain electrode is provided between time when voltage for weakening the final sustain discharge in the sustain period is applied to the sustain electrode and time when a ramp waveform voltage which decreases is applied to the scan electrode in the setup period in the following subfield. The retention time is controlled based on average brightness of image signals or ambient temperature.
