The formations run adjacently but the width increases or decreases. In a further variation the width is increased or decreased, and the coverage is increased or decreased. In a group of formations, a sequence of relative arrangement possibilities (as described) is followed. In a region of the web, several groups of formations are laid down. They cross over each other. Groups run adjacently in one region. Formations are laid down such that some zones are left uncovered. In the equipment used, strips are drawn from a storage unit to one or more laying mechanisms, which are independently operable. Each executes transverse movements, allowing the full width of the web to be covered. Each has guides for the strips, which are adjustably-spaced apart.
