To provide a method for producing a specific nicotinic acid derivative or a salt thereof. A method for producing a nicotinic acid derivative represented by the formula (I): wherein each of X 1 and X 2 which are independent of each other, is a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an alkyl group, an alkoxy group, a haloalkyl group or a haloalkoxy group; R is an alkyl group; and Hal is a chlorine atom or a bromine atom; or a salt thereof, is provided which comprises reacting a compound represented by the formula (II) : wherein X 1 , X 2 and R are as defined above, or a salt thereof, with a halogenating agent.
