Detection signal (202) is determined by a forward-looking sensor (102), where the signal (202) represents a relative speed of the vehicle before the crash. The signal (201) is associated with the signal (202) by a computation unit (105) to determine a triggering decision signal (203) for a restraint unit (108a) e.g. airbag. The signal (203) is output to a control unit (107) to control the unit (108a). An independent claim is also included for a device for determining crash type, during a vehicle crash with an object, comprising a computation unit.
