New interference pigment-type polychromic pigments (I) are based on platelet-form substrates, having a standard deviation of platelet thickness from the mean value of 15% or less; and contain (a) a coating of refractive index 1.8 or more, (b) a selective or non-selective absorbing coating and optionally (c) an outer protective layer. Independent claims are also included for: (1) pigment preparations containing one or more of the pigments (I), together with binder(s) and optionally additive(s); (2) dry preparations (e.g. pellets, granules, chips or briquets) containing (I); and (3) formulations containing (I) and one or more of adsorbents, adstringents, antimicrobial agents, antioxidants, antiperspirants, antifoams, antistatic agents, binders, biological additives, bleaches, chelate formers, deodorants, emollients, emulsifiers, emulsion stabilizers, dyes, humectants, film formers, odorants, flavorings, preservatives, corrosion inhibitors, cosmetic oils, solvents, oxidants, plant components, buffers, reductants, polishing agents, surfactants, propellant gases, turbidity components, UV filters, UV absorbers, denaturants, viscosity regulators and/or vitamins.
