Zusammenfassung:	The device has a capillary or needle, a first arrangement for causing fluid to emanate from the end of the capillary or needle or to stick to the end, especially as a drop, and an arrangement for varying the distance of the capillary or needle from the substrate. At least one image acquisition device and image processor enable detection of the time of the transfer of a drop from the needle or capillary end to the substrate as the distance reduces. The device has a capillary (11) or needle, a first arrangement for causing the fluid to emanate from the end of the capillary or needle or to stick to the end, especially in the form of a drop (12), and another arrangement for varying the distance of the capillary or needle from the substrate (10). At least one image acquisition device (14) and at least one image processor enable detection of the time of the transfer of a drop from the needle or capillary end to the substrate as the distance is reduced. AN Independent claim is also included for the following: (a) a method of applying a fluid medium to a substrate.
