The apparatus includes a contactor assembly (10, 66, 68, 88, 108) having multiple contactors (12A, 12B, 12C, 72A, 72B, 72C, 76A, 76B, 76C, 90A, 90B, 90C, 114A, 114A', 114B, 114C) such that each contactor (12A, 12B, 12C, 72A, 72B, 72C, 76A, 76B, 76C, 90A, 90B, 90C, 114A, 114A', 114B, 114C) is separately controlled such that one contactor (12A, 12B, 12C, 72A, 72B, 72C, 76A, 76B, 76C, 90A, 90B, 90C, 114A, 114A', 114B, 114C) may be closed without the other contactors (12A, 12B, 12C, 72A, 72B, 72C, 76A, 76B, 76C, 90A, 90B, 90C, 114A, 114A', 114B, 114C) of the assembly (10, 66, 68, 88, 108) being closed. The contactors (12A, 12B, 12C, 72A, 72B, 72C, 76A, 76B, 76C, 90A, 90B, 90C, 114A, 114A', 114B, 114C) are arranged such that a pair of contactors (12A, 12B, 12C, 72A, 72B, 72C, 76A, 76B, 76C, 90A, 90B, 90C, 114A, 114A', 114B, 114C) is caused to close following a zero-voltage crossing of a power signal (226).
