Work-clamping device for a sewing machine for bartacking a buttonhole

A sewing machine (5) has a locking clamp (1) adapter which positions a work piece during the completion of a locking stitch about a buttonhole (85). The adapter has a support plate (16) for the work piece and a support (21) which swivels about a horizontal axis (20) on a slide bearing (4). Operation of the clamp, and triggering contraction movement by the press-foot, is effected by a single lever forming part of a simple gear. The position adopted by the press-foot is adjustable, facilitating selection of the width of the buttonhole stitch. The range of press-foot movement is adjustable in accordance with the properties of the work-piece fabric.
