An apparatus and a method for making a digital colour proof of an image on a surface of a receiving substrate, the apparatus including a plurality of application stations for imagewise applying each a specific type of marking particles to the surface of the receiving substrate, the application stations including a first application station for applying marking particles of a first type having (L*1, a*1, b*1) colour values in CIE L*a*b* space with a hue-angle hab,1 = atan2(a*1,b*1) and a second application station for applying marking particles of a second type having (L*2, a*2, b*2) colour values in CIE L*a*b* space with a hue-angle hab,2 = atan2(a*2,b*2), wherein the hue-angles satisfy the inequality ¾hab,2 - hab,1 + k*360 DEG ¾ < 15 DEG for a number k selected from the group of -1, 0 and +1.
