The condition variable includes a fresh air charge and a combustion centroid. The parameters includes opening angle, closing angle, valve stroke curves (H1, H2) and phase position (pn) of curves. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a computer program for carrying out a method for operating an internal combustion engine (b) a control apparatus for operating an internal combustion engine (c) an internal combustion engine.
