Also claimed is the novel compound 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid monohydrate. Reaction of 3,4-dihydroxythiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic esters of formula (I) with alkylating agents in a polar diluent is effected in presence of a quaternary onium salt of formula (II) R and R = H or alkali(ne earth) metal; R and R = 1-10C alkyl; A = nitrogen or phosphorus; Y = an anion; and R - R = 1-20C alkyl, 6-15C aryl or 7-20C aralkyl An Independent claim is also included for the novel compound 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid monohydrate.
