Preparation of 1-amino-4-hydroxyanthraquinones of formula (I) involves reacting 1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone, optionally as a mixture with 2,3-dihydro-1,4-dihydroanthraquinone, with aliphatic or aromatic amine in the presence of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. R = aliphatic or aromatic radical. An Independent claim is also included for a method for mass coloration of plastics comprising introducing into a plastic the compound prepared above.
