A process for the production of nitrosobenzenes of formula (I) comprises oxidation of the corresponding amine using hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an oxidation catalyst based on tungsten and/or molybdenum compounds at 5-25 degrees C in the absence of an organic solvent at a molar ratio of aromatic amine to hydrogen peroxide to catalyst of 1:2.0-5.0:0.001-0.05.
