Zusammenfassung:	A tampon (1), wherein a compressed absorbent pledget (2) is confined in a foraminous envelope (3), is conveyed through an annular heating zone in which the envelope is at least partially bonded to the pledget so that the envelope shares the expansion of the pledget when the tampon is in use. The heating zone can be established by one or more circumferentially complete or composite heating elements. The bonding temperature is selected in dependency upon the materials of the pledget and the envelope. The conversion of a blank of thermoplastic coverstock into the envelope can precede the compression of the pledget, and such compression can precede the bonding step.
