A safety feature has a control valve (40) which vents some of the fuel from the high pressure reservoir to reduce the fuel pressure in hazard conditions e.g. if a collision is imminent. The vehicle safety system (200) provides controls signals for the ABS braking control, for the collision protection etc. The same safety system activates the fuel pressure reduction system. This reduces fire risk in a collision. To prevent loss of engine torque the reduction in fuel pressure is compensated by a lengthening of the fuel injection pulses. This prevents uncontrolled loss of torque during heavy braking, or during braking on low grip roads.
