Zusammenfassung:Non-sterile liquids such as fresh milk (and milk products) and fresh fruit juices unfortunately provide an excellent growth medium for micro-organisms, whether aerobic or, like many yeasts and bacteria, "facultatively anaerobic" micro-organisms (meaning that in theory they do not need oxygen for their metabolic processes and yet are not actually poisoned by oxygen, and so can exist in its presence). It has been found, however, that in fact such micro-organisms do seem to require oxygen for some part of their metabolic processes - or, at least, that in a virtually oxygen-free environment their growth is significantly inhibited. Thus, the invention proposes controlling the growth of micro-organisms in non-sterile liquids, such as milk and fruit juices, by the use of an oxygen scavenger to remove virtually all the free molecular oxygen from within the container in which the liquid is stored.
