Process for preparing 2,4,4,7-tetramethyl-oct-6-en-3-on and its use as perfume

Prepn. of 2,4,4,7-tetramethyl-oct-6-en-3-one (I) comprises treating diisopropylketone with 1-chloro-3-methyl-2-butene (prenyl chloride). The novelty is that the reaction is conducted in a 2-phase system contg. an aq. phase in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst.
