Extrusion coating process

A process for forming a flocculating coating compsn. is claimed. The compsn. is used for electrophotographic imaging members and contains (i) org. pigment particles dispersed in (ii) a soln. of a film forming binder dissolved in a fugitive liq. carrier. The compsn. is transported from a pump through (1) a mixing device, (2) an extrusion die inlet, (3) the die manifold, and (4) the die extrusion slot onto a substrate. The compsn. is subjected to a pressure drop of at least 10 psi across the mixing device (1) immediately prior to being transported through the inlet (2). The compsn. is maintained in turbulent flow under shear conditions with an ave. value of at least 10 reciprocal secs., while moving through the inlet (2), manifold (3) extrusion slot (4) and onto the substrate. The residence time of the compsn. in the die is less than 5 secs. The fugitive liq. is removed from the coating prior to agglomeration of the org. pigment particles while maintaining the compsn. in the coated layer undisturbed until the coating solidifies.
