Microwave device and method for measuring multiphase flows

The multiphase flow measurement involves a fluid flowing through a pipe (10) which has a series of e.g. twelve crossed-dipole cavity backed slot microwave antennae with radiating faces flush with the inner pipe wall (14). Zusammenfassung:The multiphase flow measurement involves a fluid flowing through a pipe (10) which has a series of e.g. twelve crossed-dipole cavity backed slot microwave antennae with radiating faces flush with the inner pipe wall (14). The output of an RF signal generator (20) is fed to a power divider (22) and to a pair of switching matrices (26,28) via a first switch (24), each matrix corresp. to axial or circumferential dipoles of the antennae respectively. The switching matrices are configured such that the RF signal is applied to each antenna in turn while the remaining antennae receive the transmitted microwave energy to output a signal. These output signals are fed via a second switch (30) whose position corresp. to that of the first switch, to an in-phase and quadrature demodulator (32) which also receives a signal from the power divider. The in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) signals are used to determine the amplitude ratios and the phase shift of the detected signals w.r.t. the transmitted signals, for determination of the volume fraction of each fluid phase.
