Zusammenfassung:	A data processing system includes an automated storage library (14) having a storage cell (16), a media transport and retrieval mechanism (20), and a peripheral drive device (18). The storage cell (16) holds magnetic tape cartridges in storage for retrieval by a picker (32) mounted on the transport and retrieval mechanism (20). The transport and retrieval mechanism (20) includes a cartridge drive (36) and controls to perform conditioning procedures on the tape media prior to placing the cartridge into the drive device (18) for the transfer of information to/from the tape. The conditioning procedures can be a gross positioning of the tape to the information, a refresh procedure to check for tape tension, and/or a tape length procedure.
