Zusammenfassung:Process for the preparation of 1,4-alkylenediamines of the general formula I …… in which the substituents R and R , independently of one another, denote hydrogen, C1- to C10-alkyl, phenyl or benzyl, by reaction of succinonitriles of the general formula II …… in which R and R have the abovementioned meanings, with hydrogen at temperatures of 30 to 250 DEG C and pressures of 50 to 350 bar over hydrogenation catalysts, in which the hydrogenation catalysts contain cobalt oxide and one or more oxides of the elements iron, nickel, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, phosphorus and one or more oxides of the alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, rare earth metal groups of the periodic table of the elements, of scandium and/or of yttrium.
