Zusammenfassung:	The invention relates to the use of a diarylimidazole of the formula I in which R is a radical of the formula II where R and R are hydrogen and R and R , which may be identical or different, are lower alkyl or R /R and/or R /R , in each case together, form a lower alkylene radical, and R is a lower alkyl radical, and salts thereof, as redox indicators, in particular in the presence of a substance containing one or more SH groups, to a process for determining the contents of a sample by means of a diarylimidazole of this type, and to an agent containing a diarylimidazole of the formula I. In addition, the invention relates to diarylimidazoles of the formula I with the exception of 2-(3'5'-di-tert.-butyl-4'-hydroxy- phenyl)-4(5)-(4'-dimethylaminophenyl)-5(4)-methyl-(1H)imidazole hydrochloride and to a process for the preparation thereof.
