Solid-phase analytical device and method for using same

A novel material and device useful in solid-phase binding assays to determine the presence or amount of an analyte in a test sample, pariclularly antigens, antibodies, is disclosed. The device employs 3 areas, a positive or procedural control area (32), a negative control (30) area and an analyte binding area (34). The analyte binding area (34) and the positive control area (32) are arranged substantially adjacent one another so that, when developed, reagents in the two areas produce a first representational symbol in the presence of analyte. The positive control area (32), taken alone in the presence or absence of analyte, produces a second representational symbol. The second symbol forms part of or interacts with the first symbol.
