A process for continuously separating maleic anhydride from a gaseous reaction mixture obtained in the catalytic oxidation of a hydrocarbon by treating said gaseous reaction mixture with a solvent, which comprises bringing the gaseous reaction mixture which contains the maleic anhydride into contact with dibutyl succinate or fumarate in counter-current, and removing the liquid product from the bottom product.
