A process for the preparation of very pure fluorine-containing ethanes of the general formula CF3 -CHXY, in which X denotes H or F and Y denotes H, F, Cl, Br or iodine, from fluorine-containing ethylenes of the general formula CF2 = CXY, in which X and Y have the meaning indicated above, with at least the equimolar amount of hydrogen fluoride, in the gas phase, which process comprises carrying out the reaction at temperatures of 20-200 degrees C and in the presence of a chromium oxyfluoride catalyst which has been activated with hydrogen fluoride.
