Process for the production of an article consisting of an electrically conductive substrate bearing a firmly adhering coating having a metallic appearance, consisting of a synthetic resin layer containing metal powder and, optionally, a transparent top layer, characterized in that the synthetic resin layer containing the metal powder is produced by cataphoretic deposition of metal powder, together with a cationic film-forming agent, from an aqueous electro-coating bath, containing the metal powder and the film-forming agent in protonated form, onto the substrate immersed in the electro-coating bath and wired as the cathode.
