A process for the manufacture of acicular ferromagnetic iron particles of acicular iron(III) oxide hydroxyde which consists of lepidocrodite and, optionally, goethite and is provided with a shape-stabilizing surface coating by reduction with hydrogen at 275 degrees to 420 degrees C, wherein the acicular iron(III) oxide hydroxide contains 15 to 100 percent by weight of lepidocrocite and 0 to 85 percent by weight of goethite and, after the application of the shape-stabilizing surface coating known per se and before reduction, is dehydrated and heat-treated for 0.5 to 8 hours at temperatures between 400 degrees and 750 degrees C. |
