Zusammenfassung:	Hydroxy-acid derivs. of formula (I), their 1-4C alkyl esters, and their base-addn. salts are new. In the formula, one of R' and R2 is H and the other is H, 1-6C alkyl, or phenyl opt. substd. by halogen, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, NO2, amino or 1-4C alkanoylamino; one of R3 and R4 is H and the other is H or 1-4C alkyl; and either R5 is H, R6 is OH and R7 + R8 is a direct bond, or R5 + R6 is a direct bond, R7 is H and R8 is OH. (I) have ulcer-healing properties. In humans, dosage is 50-500 mg. p.o., 4 times per day. Specific cpds. (I) include 3 beta-methyl-5-(1 beta-hydroxypentyl)-2-oxo-tetrahydrofuran-4 alpha-yl-carboxylic acid. prepd. by cyclising 2 beta-methyl-3 alpha-carboxy-non-4-cis-enoic acid with H2O2 in formic acid.
