An apparatus for forming a can end (124) in a forming press (100) having a fixed base (104) and an upper punch assembly (102) movable relative to the fixed base (104), the apparatus comprising:a draw punch (109) carried by the upper punch assembly (102) of the forming press (100),a draw pad (112) supported for movement in the fixed base (104) of the forming press (100), the draw punch (109) and draw pad (112) being aligned with one another for clamping a peripheral portion of a can end blank,a pre-panel punch (118) carried by a dual action piston (123) of the upper punch assembly (102) of the forming press (100),a die center (116) carried by the upper punch assembly (102) of the forming press (100), the die center (116) surrounding the pre-panel punch (118) which is controlled to move relative to the die center (116) between an extended position and a retracted position,a crown ring (122) supported for movement in the fixed base (104) of the forming press (100) and having an upper surface for defining a contour for a crown of the can end,a knockout (120) carried by the upper punch assembly (102), the knockout (120) being aligned with the crown ring (122) for engaging a peripheral portion of the cupped can end blank,a panel punch (126) mounted to the fixed base (104), andan inner form die (119) movably mounted in the fixed base (104) and surrounding the panel punch (126).
