The blade segment (50) includes a shell segment (84) having a pressure side (62) and a suction side (64) extending between a leading edge (66) and a trailing edge (68), the shell segment (84) further having a tip end (80) and a root end (82). The blade segment (50) further includes at least one joint portion (100) projecting from the shell segment (84) at one of the tip end (80) or the root end (82) and defining a generally span-wise extending joining surface (112). The joint portion (100) allows the blade segment (50) to be coupled to an adjacent blade segment (50) with a mating joint portion (100).
