A pet feed, esp. for cats and dogs, which has a soft texture and is storage stable, is prepd. by (a) taking proteins e.g. muscles and/or offal, fish or fish waste (finely cut-up), and/or meal derived from animal or vegetable proteins; (b) adding cereal flour; (c) adding is not >20-25% of a mixt. contg. natural coloids such as fish solubles, milk proteins, gum, an antimycotic and/or bactericide; is not >5% NaCl and opt. is not >10% of a plasticizers so as to give a homogeneous product; (d) working in a cooker-extruder with moisture content regulated at 15-35% by injecting water or steam so as to pasteurise the product and (e) cutting the extrudate into pieces of required size. Product resembles fresh food, does not require large amts. of saccharides to fix the water present and is stable without need for sterilisation.
