The machine has a grouping device and a feeding arrangement (2). The containers (5) are successively fed to a work station (20) with pre-determined supplies. The containers are on the feeding arrangement. The grouping device has a sensor element (70) detecting the supply of the containers and a first stopper element (6a, 60a) which stops the movement of the first container. A second stopper element stops the movement of a following container. The detection time of the supply of a container and the speed of the feeding arrangement is determined while the feeding arrangement of the container is supplied. The feeding arrangement is a continuously running conveyor. The stopper elements are adjustable in such a manner, that the containers are at a predefinable distance to each other after grouping.
