Novel compounds of formula (wherein R is C 1-12 hydrocarbon carboxylic acyl and R1 is C 1-8 alkyl) are prepared by esterification of the corresponding 17-ols. 17,21 - Dihydroxypregna - 4,9(11) - diene - 3,20- dione 21-mesylate is prepared by mesylating the parent 17,21-diol. Compounds of the above formula are convertible into further products as described in Specification 1,215,161.
